Throughout 2022 images and stories emerged that revealed what makes Duke stand apart in the state, in the region and across the globe. Below are a few of our favorite moments that illuminate the ways Duke is committed to bold thinking, transformative learning, revitalized community, ambitious partnerships and an ever-expanding network of experience.

Winter in central North Carolina never comes with the promise of snow, so when it does fall it brings with it a feeling of joy and wonder.
The Holi Experience

Men’s basketball had a season for the ages as retiring Hall of Fame coach, Mike Krzyzewski, led the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

Jon Scheyer stepped in as the 20th head coach after being part of national championship teams as a player and coach.

Cate Schick came out as one of the Duke Blue Devils, ahead of the 100th anniversary of the mascot which included a Blue Devil reunion.

The 2022 Commencement featured the first undergraduate class commencement for Duke Kunshan University.
Orientation Week Gets Reimagined

A new immersive orientation program divided the incoming class of 2026 into 19 separate experiences and offered new students chances to learn through doing.

After the close of Orientation (with a number of new students having just returned from Washington DC) the annual class photo served as the point to bring the entire class together. And the week wrapped up with the celebratory fireworks.
A Convocation to Remember

When rain started falling on students attending Convocation the faculty and administration didn’t seek shelter, but rather communion.

A September visit by President Vincent Price showcased how Duke Kannapolis serves as a model for partnership across the state.

Provost Sally Kornbluth, who accepted the role as the 18th president of MIT in October, led Duke in improving faculty excellence and the student experience. Duke also saw the departures of three others who helped shape Duke: Valerie Ashby, Kyle Cavanaugh and Mike Schoenfeld.
The Community Comes Together

Outside of Duke Chapel pet owners turned out for the annual Blessing of the Animals, and prayers, poems and reflections were shared in support of Ukraine.

The Duke Medical Pavilion took advantage of its sweeping lawn to raise awareness of causes such as breast cancer and organ donation.

President Price and Nicholas School of the Environment Dean Toddi Steelman brought heightened awareness to Duke’s commitment to find climate change solutions.

The Asian Student Association holds a cultural showcase, called "Converge: Illuminate," in 2022, while Awaaz, the two-night showcase South Asian culture, is Duke’s largest student-run production.

Duke students learn with one of the world’s leading classical ballet companies during the American Ballet Theater’s residency, and tell stories that move between the real world and fantasy in the Theater Studies production of She Kills Monsters.

The Duke Puppy Kindergarten garnered national attention with a 60 Minutes piece on the science of canine cognition.

Mike Elko took over as the 22nd head football coach and led the Blue Devils to their first bowl game since 2018, being named the ACC coach of the year and a finalist for numerous college coach of the year awards in the process.
